This week we began the new section on alienation and isolation. We read The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and we read A Rose for Emily. A Rose for Emily was a heavy read. Her mom died when she was young and her dad kept her away from finding a husband. She was isolated. I think she was probably traumatised by her mother's death, and her isolation from her father probably escalated that. The story talks about how Colonel Sartoris had been dead 10 years and she didn't know. Then it talks about her father dying and she refuses to believe it for 3 days. Then, at the end, the readers learn that she had killed her crush and had been sleeping with him for 40 years. I think she couldn't comprehend death. Because she was isolated from her family for so many years and the only death she knew was her mom, and because she was young, she didn't really understand death. She couldn't understand death.
